About the GU-78B
The GU-78B is a metal-ceramic tetrode with forced-air cooling. Its high transconductance means it needs relatively little drive.
Any standard transceiver gives 50 W at half power. It still pays to limit the rig's output so the amplifier is never overdriven by accident.
What 2 kW takes
- an anode supply rated for a long, heavy load;
- continuous airflow over the tube, including for a while after the anode voltage is removed;
- an antenna, coax and tuner that handle more than 2 kW.
This kind of power is for DX and contests, when you need to get through the noise. Know the limit your licence class allows before you key up.
